TIMELINE

1954

  • Unit Formed – Paraded at Dunnottar School

1959

  • Commanding Officer Lt Cdr A.G Mitchell MBE RN on his retirement from the Royal Navy obtained the use of an old derelict Episcopalian school (built in 1846) as unit HQ. This building is still used today as our HQ.

1960

  • Won first Pennant
  • Won the Duthie Shield for being the best Sporting Unit in Grampian District for the first time. We have only lost this trophy 3 times in all the years since.

1962

  • Won the Stephenson Trophy for being the top Unit in Northern Area for the first time. Win it Continuously until 1971.

1963

  • Girls Nautical Training Corps formed

1964

  • Won the Canada Trophy for being the top unit in the UK for the first time
  • Junior Boys pulling crew win the Ridgewell Trophy

1965

  • Win The Canada Trophy Again!!!
  • Awarded First Burgee

1966

  • Win the Canada Trophy for the 3rd year in succession.

1968

  • Assisted with Sea Trials of the Malcolm Millar on completion of building in Aberdeen

1969

  • With the gift of a piece of land by the Town Council, a boatshed was built.
  • Junior Boys Win the Ridgewell Trophy
  • Senior Boys Win the Hornblower Trophy for the first time.

1970

  • Won the Canada Trophy for the 4th time.

1971

  • Senior Boys win the Hornblower trophy
  • Asked not to enter for Stephenson Trophy, instead acted as host Unit to 5 contingents of Irish Sea Cadets, each consisting of 6 cadets and 1 officer, who spent a week with cadets and lived in parents homes.
  • Awarded “Freedom of Entry to the Burgh” by Stonehaven Town Council.

1972

  • Regain Stephenson Trophy , hold it until 1975
  • Boys Seniors win the Hornblower Trophy
  • 3 members of the unit awarded Royal Humane Society Parchments

1974

  • New Commanding Officer LtCdr(SCC) George Park RNR

1975

  • Boys Juniors win Ridgewell Trophy
  • Girls Open win Burton Cup

1976

  • Unit falls to Pennant standard having won Burgees since 1965, continues at this level until 1981.
  • Boys Junior win Ridgewell Trophy
  • Girls Open win Burton Cup

1977

  • New Officer in Charge Lt(SCC) Finlay McArthur RNR

1979

  • New Officer in Charge Lt Cdr (SCC) Robin Walker RNR

1980

  • Lose the Duthie Shield for the first time since first winning it in 1960
  • Senior Boys win the Hornblower Trophy

1981

  • Officer in Charge Lt Cdr (SCC) Robin Walker RNR becomes District Officer. Lt (SCC) Finlay McArthur RNR has second spell has Officer in Charge.
  • Regain Duthie Shield
  • GNTC became contingents of the Sea Cadets

1982

  • Win back Burgee Status. Have not lost it since!

1984

  • Boys Seniors win the Hornblower Trophy

1985

  • Lt (SCC) Brian McRobb RNR takes over as new Officer in Charge.
  • Boys Seniors win the Hornblower Trophy

1986

  • Win the National Shooting League 10

1988

  • Girls Boathandling win the Arethusa Shield
  • Unit wins the Navy League Trophy for overall Boathandling competition

1989

  • Girls Boathandling win the Arethusa Shield
  • Boys Boathandling Win the P&O Trophy
  • Unit wins the Navy League Trophy for overall boathandling competition.
  • GNTC Appleton Trophy Awarded for best GNTC in Area
  • 3rd Mountbatten Trophy awarded for best GNTC in Britain.

1990

  • McBeath Trophy Awarded for a particularly meritous performance by a unit

1991

  • Girls Open win Burton Cup

1992

  • GNTC ceases to exist, all become Sea Cadet Corps

1993

  • Lose Duthie Shield – First time since 1980.
  • Boys Seniors win the Hornblower Trophy 

1994

  • Boys Junior win Ridgewell Trophy
  • Girls Boathandling win the Arethusa Shield

1995

  • Boys Open Crew win the Hornblower Trophy
  • Boys Junior win Ridgewell Trophy
  • Win the Centurian Trophy for unit with the best use of the SCC Yachts
  • Regained Duthie Shield, have not lost it since.

  • Won the Stephenson Trophy, First time since 1975.
  • Won the Thomas Grey Memorial Prize as runners up to the Canada Trophy.

1998

  • Lt (SCC) Morag Reid RNR becomes our first female Officer in Charge.
  • Boys Open Crew win the Hornblower Trophy

1999

  • Boys Junior win Ridgewell Trophy
  • Win the Stephenson Trophy

2000

  • Win the Stephenson Trophy
  • Win the Canada Trophy for the 5th Time.

  • Boys Open Crew win the Hornblower Trophy
  • Win the Area Officers Cup as runner up to the Stephenson Trophy.

2002

  • New Commanding Officer SLt(SCC) Kevin Morris RNR
  • Boathandling (Oars) crew win the Arethusa Shield and Mitchell Trophy

2003

  • Gain RYA Training Centre recognition with PO (SCC) Andrew Lawson as Principal
  • Boathandling (Oars) crew retain the Mitchell Trophy

2004

  • Boys Open Crew win the Hornblower Trophy
  • Win the Stephenson Trophy
  • Win the Commodores Cup as third place in the  Canada Trophy

2005

  • Win the Area Officers Cup as runner up to the Stephenson Trophy
2007
  • Boys Junior win Ridgewell Trophy
  • Win the Deputy Area Officers Cup as third place Unit to the Stephenson Trophy
